Ally to Advocate: 101

4 modules built to ensure a solid foundation for intentional & effective advocacy

Module 1

Using Gender Affirming Language

This module serves as both an introduction and a refresher on gendered language, why it matters, and how to build gender-affirming language. Topics include concepts like sex assigned at birth and gender identity, as well as ways to offer support and show up for others while handling mistakes gracefully. The emphasis is not memorization, but building a shared vocabulary and understanding of how gendered language and representations impact everyday life.

Module 2

Unpacking Privilege

Privilege is often used narrowly and the concept can produce strong emotions because of the way it is used and because of its relationship to power. This module emphasizes the complexity of privilege and offers methods for locating yourself and understanding how multiple identities can intersect, interact, and change over time. We will also cover the roles of ally, advocate, activist, and accomplice.

Module 3

Bye, Bye, Binary

Non-binary genders are often framed as unusual or new in public conversations. But the gender binary is not a universal concept and many other models exist both contemporarily and historically. This module gives a context for both the impact of the gender binary on how we navigate and experience daily life and for interacting more thoughtfully with people of a diverse range of gender identities and expressions.

Module 4

Facing Societal Tropes & Stereotypes

According to reports by GLAAD, LGBTQ+ television representation is diminishing in 2026 as inclusive series are increasingly canceled. This module focuses on the impacts of trans and non-binary media representation in a cultural landscape where a majority of Americans claim that they have never met a trans or non-binary person. The stories we tell (and who is telling them) can influence how people are seen and treated. There is a content warning for video 4.2 of this module, which describes common stereotypes and tropes that often include violence.
